What makes Goddess Garden’s Mineral Sunscreens better?
Goddess Garden produces premium mineral sunscreen products that go on sheer and provide serious protection from the sun using only gentle ingredients that are safe for people and the planet. Most conventional sunscreens use toxic chemicals like oxybenzone or octinoxate which are absorbed into the bloodstream and have been linked to endocrine disruption. They are especially dangerous to children and are even more hazardous to coral reefs. Unlike chemical sunscreens, Goddess Garden uses pure zinc and titanium to provide safe, reliable protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Goddess Garden is reef safe and biodegradable, so once it washes off, it can safely return into the earth where it came from in the first place. Now you can protect your family and the environment at the same time!
Can I use Goddess Garden Mineral Sunscreen on my kids, or is it only for adult use?
Kids, adults and those who are young at heart can use all of our sunscreens. We have formulated our products using the best and most gentle ingredients available, so they are safe for everyone (including the coral reefs)! However, we do also have formulas specific to kids and babies as well!
What is the difference between the Kids and the Baby Sunscreen?
In our newest formulations, Goddess Garden Kids and Baby Sunscreen have the same gentle and effective ingredients, including pure zinc in the SPF 50 formulas or a synergistic blend of zinc and titanium dioxide in the sprays. They both also feature a light scent from lavender essential oils and soothing plant-based ingredients like organic aloe vera. In all our products, we use only gentle ingredients that are safe for sensitive skin.
What are the differences between your traditional mineral sunscreen and Face the Day and Tinted Face the Day?
While some ingredients are the same, these products are uniquely formulated for different uses. Our traditional Mineral Sunscreens include SPF 30 and 50, are tested to be water resistant for 80 minutes and are designed to be more “active” sunscreens. They are our pick for weekend hikes, kids’ soccer games and times when you are intentionally outdoors. Face the Day and Tinted Face the Day were designed to protect against unintentional daily sun exposure using powerful minerals. They are intended to be used in place of a facial moisturizer. As such, they also have skin tightening and smoothing properties so they can double as a moisturizing and firming makeup primer. Tinted Face the Day is also water resistant, so you can be confident the color will stay in place throughout the day.
What is the difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50?
In terms of the protection they offer, they’re more similar than you might think. SPF 30 and SPF 50 sunscreens are both very powerful and protect against 97% and 98% of the sun’s UV rays respectively. We think the 97% protection you get from SPF 30 is a great option, but we realize 1 percent can make a difference for people who spend a lot of time outside or are particularly sensitive to the sun. That’s why we offer sheer, easy-to-apply options in both values.
Does Goddess Garden have sunscreens higher than SPF 50?
Our highest SPF is 50. Despite how it might sound, SPF isn’t a linear scale from 0 to 100 and it doesn’t increase exponentially. For example, an SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB rays, while an SPF 30 blocks 97%. The SPF is doubled, but the protection level isn’t. SPF 50 protects against 98% of UV rays, but you would need a product with an SPF of 100 to protect against 99% of UVB rays. That’s a lot of zinc!Because of the marginal difference in protection, the FDA has deemed SPF values above 50 misleading. And regardless of SPF value, you should always reapply your sunscreen at least every two hours and after towel-drying.
Can your sunscreens stain fabrics or surfaces?
Yes. While the stains are usually not permanent, our sunscreens contain nourishing oils and pure minerals. Like all oils, they can stain some fabrics. The oils also help the minerals spread smoothly and adhere to your skin, which means they can do the same to your deck, car seats, furniture or fabrics, too. It’s best to let our sunscreens dry after application for few minutes before letting fabric touch your skin. If you are using our sprays, we recommend spraying outdoors over safe surfaces, and avoiding your car, deck, patio or other areas that could be hard to clean.
What happens if I get a stain from Goddess Garden sunscreens?
If you wind up getting a stain on your clothes, we recommend applying a 50/50 mix of water and rubbing alcohol directly to the stain, followed by dabbing, which will help lift the stain off your clothes. If you don’t have any rubbing alcohol, you can apply dish soap directly to the stain, then wash as normal. Laundry detergent does not have oil-removing properties, so dish soap should get the job done!
What is the best way to wash Goddess Garden off of my skin?
A good lather with a natural soap (like a castile soap) will usually get Goddess Garden off your skin. Remember that Goddess Garden is packed with moisturizing ingredients like aloe vera, coconut oil, and shea butter, so you will probably feel these moisturizing ingredients even after the active minerals have washed off.
Do your sunscreens contain phthalates or parabens?
Phthalates and parabens often hide in the ingredients labeled as “fragrance.” Our scented sunscreens all receive their aroma from organic lavender essential oils, so that means our sunscreens are all phthalate and paraben-free while still smelling sweet! Learn more about phthalates and parabens.
Are Goddess Garden Sunscreens organic?
Our SPF 30 formulas are certified organic, and our SPF 50 formulas are not. This mostly boils down to their higher concentration of minerals needed to achieve a higher SPF. Minerals cannot be considered “organic,” and certification requires a minimum threshold of 70% organic ingredients. For all our formulas, we select only gentle ingredients that are safe for sensitive skin and the planet, and all Goddess Garden Sunscreens are packed with nourishing organic ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, coconut oil and sunflower oil!
Why can’t mineral sunscreens be 100% organic?
Pure minerals offer powerful UV protection, but they can never be considered “organic” ingredients since they’ve never been alive. This means mineral sunscreens (whether made by Goddess Garden or not) will never be 100% organic.
Do Goddess Garden Mineral Sunscreens make you ‘white’ like some of the other mineral sunscreens on the market?
All Goddess Garden Sunscreens, including our sprays, apply as white lotions. Through over a dozen years of research and development, we have created a much more transparent, mineral sunscreen formula, even with an SPF value of 50. This means our sunscreens go on virtually transparent after you rub them in. There are also some tips for helping mineral sunscreens go on more sheer and easily. Check out our video where we explain the best way to apply mineral sunscreen.
What are your products scented with?
We use organic, distilled botanical lavender essential oil to scent most of our sunscreens. Lavender is a very calming scent, and as an essential oil, it also helps soothe your skin. Our Sport sunscreen is unscented.
What preservatives do you use?
Preservatives are necessary to prevent the growth of bacteria and keep our products fresh. As always, we select them with sensitive skin in mind. In our sprays, we use a preservative system comprised of coconut-derived glyceryl caprylate and caprylhydroxamic acid. The SPF 50 sunscreens contain the same system, as well as caprylyl glycol, ethylhexylglycerin and phenoxyethanol. In our Cooling Aloe Gel, we use potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate. Most of these ingredients have been given a one rating by the EWG, their safest rating, and all are considered safe for use in body products by the FDA. People regularly shop for food, but it would be inconvenient to shop for sunscreen every few days. Because of that, these ingredients are considered great options when the alternatives are harsh preservatives, like parabens, or the risks of not using them at all.
What minerals do you use?
We use either zinc oxide or a combination of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to reflect UVA and UVB rays and protect your skin from the sun. Our SPF 50 sunscreens only use zinc oxide.
Is your zinc coated?
In order to maximize the skin-calming benefits of zinc, we use uncoated zinc in our sunscreen lotions and sprays. The oils we use, coupled with the way we add the zinc to our sunscreen formulas, provide aesthetic benefits similar to coated zinc. Additionally, we use non-nano, pharmaceutical-grade zinc. For our sunscreen lip balms, we use coated zinc.
Do you use nanoparticles in Goddess Garden Mineral Sunscreens?
No. A “nanoparticle” is often considered a particle under 100nm (nanometers) in size. All of our minerals have a range between 100 and 130nm with an average size of 120nm. This means our minerals are all non-nano.
Are your sunscreens reef-safe?
Yes! We never use toxic or harmful chemicals, so all our sunscreens are completely reef-safe!
Why do you use aluminum hydroxide?
We use aluminum hydroxide in some of our sunscreens as an essential coating to keep the titanium stable. Since the aluminum hydroxide is used as a coating, it will not be absorbed. Aluminum hydroxide is different from aluminum chlorohydrate, the ingredient commonly used in antiperspirants that has been associated with cancer and Alzheimer’s concerns. The EWG even gives aluminum hydroxide a 1, its safest rating. We feel using a combination of titanium and zinc is a very safe and effective way to offer sun protection. It goes on sheer, is not absorbed and reflects the rays away, offering gentle yet powerful broad-spectrum protection.
Is your sunscreen vegan?
You’ll be glad to learn that Goddess Garden’s Sunscreens are indeed vegan! No animal products are ever used in our formulas. We are also Leaping Bunny-certified to be cruelty-free.
Are your sunscreens gluten-free?
With the exception of Tinted Face the Day, our sunscreens do not contain gluten or wheat-derived products. The xanthan gum we use in our sunscreens is sometimes fermented from wheat, but our supplier has tested for the allergen in this ingredient and none remains after processing. However, we are not a gluten-free facility and our products have not been tested to be gluten-free. For those with a gluten sensitivity (or any allergy or sensitivity), we recommend trying our sunscreen on the inside of your elbow 24 hours prior to use to make sure it works for you.
Are your sunscreens tested on animals?
Never! We don’t believe in animal testing and we’re Leaping Bunny-certified. Our products are not tested on animals—only people! Learn more about how we test our products.
What is the difference between mineral (or physical) and chemical sunscreen?
Conventional chemical sunscreens rely on chemical ingredients to absorb the sun’s UVA and UVB (ultraviolet) rays. These chemicals are absorbed by the skin and have been shown to cause hormone disruption and can break down over time into free radicals which may cause skin cancers. Mineral (or physical) sunscreens use only natural ingredients and minerals to block the sun’s rays. Minerals are recommended by the Environmental Working Group as the best sunscreen ingredients available. See our EWG page for more information.
What makes mineral sunscreens effective? How do they work?
Goddess Garden uses naturally occurring minerals zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to reflect the sun’s damaging ultraviolet (UV) rays. These minerals act like tiny little mirrors that create an invisible shield that bounces the sun’s rays off the skin, offering the best sun protection available! Since the minerals aren’t absorbed, they’re safe and gentle, even on sensitive skin.
I’ve heard I need to apply sunscreen a long time before going outside. Is this true for mineral sunscreens, too?
Because mineral sunscreens do not have to go through a chemical reaction on the skin before they work, they are effective immediately, compared with conventional sunscreen which must be applied 15-20 minutes before sun exposure to see results.
I have tried other mineral sunscreens and they left my skin feeling pasty, greasy and white. Are all mineral sunscreens the same?
Nope! Goddess Garden Sunscreens are made with a blend of minerals that are virtually transparent. As their base, our lotions use high-end butters and oils that leave your skin soft and moisturized. This makes our sunscreens non-greasy, sheer and easy to apply.
What makes Goddess Garden Mineral Sunscreen a more natural option?
The term “natural” is an unregulated term that can mean different things to different people. We prefer to use the term mineral sunscreen. When people use “natural” they are often referring to the fact that we are not using chemical filters to provide sun protection. Our Mineral Sunscreens offer a safe alternative to chemical sunscreens, which have been shown to cause hormone disruption in humans and inflict harm on our coral reefs We are very particular about the ingredients we select for our formulas, and our priority is offering safe sunscreen that is gentle on sensitive skin as well as on the planet.
Do I have to use sunscreen every day? I only drive to and from work and then I’m inside all day.
Sun damage occurs daily, year ’round, when it’s cloud, and even through your car windows. We recommend applying sunscreen every day, even in colder months, to prevent early skin aging and to help prevent the possibility of skin cancers.
How much sunscreen should I use? How often should I reapply?
Apply about a teaspoon of sunscreen to your face and about a palm-full (one ounce) to your whole body. Reapply immediately after swimming and sweating excessively. Learn more about the best ways to use sunscreen.
Are the Continuous Spray bottles safe to take on an airplane?
According to the TSA guidelines, because our continuous sprays are air-powered and free from flammable propellants, they are safe to bring aboard an aircraft. However, because that is not the standard among spray sunscreens, it often requires an explanation at the airport. To avoid hassles in the security line, we stopped making our 3.4-ounce travel-size sprays, the largest allowable size on a carry-on. We instead recommend our 1-oz. or 3.4-oz. lotions if you’re traveling with a carry-on and using our sprays only if you are checking your bag.
What is the propellant in the continuous sprays?
This innovative product uses simple, compressed air in an aluminum pouch—no flammable propellants required! This also makes the entire can easily recyclable.
I heard titanium dioxide was bad for you. Is it?
Rest assured, our titanium dioxide is safe! If titanium is uncoated, it can create free radicals, which have been linked to cancer. Ours is coated to keep it stable. Additionally, there are two main crystalline structures of titanium: anatase and rutile. The anatase form is more reactive and creates more free radicals, so we use the most stable, rutile form. Zinc and titanium work very well together, which is why we use titanium in some of our sunscreens, but we always take precautions to ensure all our ingredients are safe.
Do your sunscreens contain retinol (vitamin A)?
No, our sunscreens are free from retinol (vitamin A). When applied to skin, vitamin A can reduce wrinkles, improve healing and fight acne. Many conventional sunscreens are formulated with vitamin A in order for manufacturers to market products as “anti-aging.” Vitamin A can cause skin irritation on its own, but when paired with the sun, it can trigger some potentially dangerous side effects. That’s why we’ll never use it in our sunscreen. If you use vitamin A, make sure it’s at night. Retinol and sunshine just don’t mix!
Do your sunscreens contain PABA?
No; PABA has been linked to hormone disruption, genetic defects and other health complications. We have never used PABA or any other chemical sunscreen. And we never will!
How are Goddess Garden SPF 50 sunscreens different than other SPF 50s?
Goddess Garden’s SPF 50 sunscreens use minerals and gentle, plant-based formulas featuring organic ingredients like shea butter and coconut oil. They’re also exceptionally sheer and easy to apply for high SPF mineral sunscreens, and they offer broad-spectrum protection for a broad range of people from babies and kids to athletes and all adults!
Don’t higher SPFs usually use chemical sunscreens?
Often, higher SPFs use chemicals to block UV rays because higher mineral content can mean a more whitening effect, but we only use minerals in our SPF 50 sunscreens and we’ve worked hard to make them sheer!
I have sensitive skin. Are the SPF 50 formulas just as gentle?
Yes! While the SPF 50 formulas have a different base than the SPF 30 in order to allow for sheer application at a higher concentration of minerals, all the ingredients are very gentle. Our founder, Nova, created Goddess Garden specifically for her daughter’s sensitive skin, so making formulas that are safe for those with sensitivities is always our priority.
With more minerals, are the SPF 50 sunscreens thick or whitening?
While the SPF 50s can be a bit more whitening on some people. There are no paste-like lotions here! Our SPF 50 sunscreens are specifically formulated to be smooth, sheer and easy to spread.
Is the Cooling Aloe Gel sticky?
Unlike many aloe vera gels, ours is silky and absorbs quickly, so it’s never sticky.
How is our Cooling Aloe Gel different than other aloe vera gels?
Goddess Garden Cooling Aloe Gel is certified organic and contains no synthetic colors or fragrances. The silky formula is easy to wear because it absorbs quickly without a sticky residue, and it includes essential oils to cool and nourish the skin. It’s also the only certified-organic air-powered aloe vera spray!
Does the Cooling Aloe Gel contain any sunscreen?
No. It’s important to note the Cooling Aloe Gel does not provide any sun protection. It is intended to cool and sooth sunburned, wind burned or dry skin. Of course, we encourage using a mineral sunscreen anytime you’re in the sun to avoid sunburns and prevent premature skin aging.
Why do you use a spray for your Aloe Gel?
The Cooling Aloe Gel Spray applies a thin, even layer so you won’t have to rub delicate, sunburned or irritated skin. Because it is a water-based product with no harsh propellants, there are no particles that linger in the air, minimizing inhalation risk. The spray gel is powered by air and the can is also completely recyclable. We also offer a 1-oz. gel for travel.
Is the Aloe Gel safe for sensitive skin? Can my children use it?
Yes! Our Cooling Aloe Gel is made without artificial fragrances or colors. The gel contains organic aloe vera combined with organic tea tree and lavender essential oils to soothe, soften and cool the skin. It’s safe for sensitive skin, kids and adults alike!
Why is water the first ingredient in the Cooling Aloe Gel?
The water is used to rehydrate the aloe vera. We use dehydrated aloe vera to avoid a potential issue with aloein, which is present in fresh aloe. High-aloein-containing products have raised some concerns, so we chose the safest route. We use certified-organic aloe vera powder, and the aloein is removed by filtering and rinsing the aloe plants during the process.
Why are some ingredients in parenthesis after a scientific-sounding name?
The longer names are the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) names. They’re based on each ingredient’s scientific name and are required on cosmetic packaging to maintain consistency in labeling. If the ingredient has a common name, it is included in parenthesis to make it easier to understand.
My sunscreen spray won’t spray! Can you help?
Because we use minerals for sun protection instead of chemicals that get into the bloodstream, there are tiny rocks in our formulas. Sometimes these minerals build up on the spray nozzle. If they dry, they can clog the sprayer. Try running the cap and nozzle under hot water to rinse away any excess minerals. If that doesn’t fix the issue, you can take a safety pin and gently tap the center of the spray area, where the lotion comes out. Minerals can accumulate in the opening and may need a little extra help. If you’re still having trouble, it could be that the cap was dislodged during transit. Try pushing down on the ring around the cap until you hear or feel a snap. That will click the cap in place if it is loose. These quick fixes should help, but if not, contact us so we can look into it. You’ll also be happy to know that our newest spray formulations are smoother than ever to dramatically minimize clogging!
Are your products recyclable?
Yes! Simply make sure the bottle is empty and clean, then recycle as normal. With the sunscreen sprays and sticks, please remove the label prior to recycling. Different municipalities do have different recycling abilities, so if you’re unsure, check with your local recycling facility.
Baby Care
Is the Goddess Garden Baby Bath and Body safe for newborns?
We created the Goddess Garden Baby Bath and Body line with the specific needs of extra sensitive skin in mind, using only the most gentle ingredients available. The individual products use soothing botanicals like organic calendula, coconut oil and oatmeal to nourish delicate skin while you cleanse, protect and support healing. We do encourage patch tests before starting regular use, and as always, consult your doctor about any concerns or serious allergies.
Can I use these products on my baby if they have eczema?
Of course! Some of the products in our Baby Bath and Body line, like the Hydration Stick and Healing Ointment, are even intended to help ease eczema symptoms. Colloidal oatmeal and calendula help soothe irritated, dry or itchy skin and promote healing while organic botanicals like argan oil, aloe vera and coconut oil gently moisturize.
Are the products hypoallergenic and tested for allergies?
Because the FDA hasn’t set any regulation standards or testing requirements for these claims, we don’t love using them. What we can tell you is that our products are formulated to be safe for extra sensitive skin, and we always avoid ingredients that are likely to cause irritation. Nova started making clean skincare in the first place for her own baby daughter Paige, who was allergic to the harsh chemicals in conventional products. So our formulas have been tested by family and friends for years, and were specifically created with Paige—and babies like her—in mind.
Do your products contain phthalates or parabens?
No! Phthalates and parabens often hide in products under the broad ingredient label “fragrance,” but our scented formulas all receive their aroma from organic lavender essential oils and other natural ingredients. That means our Baby Bath and Body line is phthalate and paraben-free while still smelling sweet! Learn more about phthalates and parabens.
What are your products scented with?
We use only pure and organic botanical essential oils to scent our products. Many of the Baby Bath and Body formulas feature oils from lavender and peppermint, which are calming to the mind and soothing to the skin.
Why is water the first ingredient in the Baby Aloe Gel Spray?
The water is used to rehydrate the aloe vera. We use dehydrated aloe vera to avoid a potential issue with aloein, which is present in fresh aloe. High-aloein-containing products have raised some concerns, so we chose the safest route. We use certified-organic aloe vera powder, and the aloein is removed by filtering and rinsing the aloe plants during the process.
Does your aloe vera contain aloein?
Nope! We use dehydrated aloe vera powder from which aloein is removed by filtering and rinsing the plants during the process. We do this to avoid any potential issues raised by the aloein in fresh aloe, just to be safe!
What preservatives are in your formulations?
Preservatives are necessary to prevent the growth of bacteria and keep our products fresh. As always, we select them with sensitive skin in mind. For the Baby Bath and Body line, we use sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, radish root ferment filtrate, phytic acid, gluconic acid and coconut-derived glyceryl caprylate and caprylhydroxamic acid. Most of these ingredients have been given a rating of one by the EWG, their safest rating, and all are considered to be safe for use in body products by the FDA. Preventing the growth of bacteria in baby products is very important, and these ingredients are considered great options when the alternatives are harsh preservatives, like parabens, or the risk of not using preservatives at all.
Is this line non-irritating?
For all our products, we always avoid using ingredients that are likely to cause irritation, including synthetic fragrances, parabens and phthalates. Our formulas have also been tested by friends and family members with sensitive skin for years!
Are all products in the line vegan?
Yes! We’re proud to be a completely vegan company, all the way down to using plant-based wax from carnauba palm trees instead of beeswax to help our Hydration Stick, sunscreen sticks and lip balms keep their shape. You’ll be happy to know we’re also Leaping Bunny certified to be cruelty-free, so you never have to worry about our animal friends when you choose Goddess Garden.
Are the Baby Bath and Body products natural?
For all the formulas, we selected soothing organic and plant-based ingredients, with each product containing 70% certified-organic ingredients. When people refer to our products as “natural,” they probably mean that we’re a safer option than many conventional products because they’re free from harsh chemicals like synthetic fragrance, parabens and phthalates. In everything we do, we handpick the best and most gentle ingredients that will give our formulas wonderful benefits and a premium feel and without irritating sensitive skin.
Is the line organic?
Each formula is full of nourishing certified-organic botanicals, including shea butter, aloe vera, calendula and coconut oil—just to name a few!—and every product in the line contains 70% organic ingredients.
How much of the Relaxing Bubble Bath should I use?
This partly depends on preference, but it’s always best to start with a small amount and add as you go! Begin by adding two or three capfuls of the Relaxing Bubble Bath to running water, swish the water with your hands to increase the bubbles and add more formula if you wish!
Where can the hydration stick and healing ointment be applied?
The Hydration Stick and Healing Ointment were created for even the most sensitive skin and are safe to use wherever you want to soothe dryness or irritation. As always, our products are for external use only, so avoid applying close to your little one’s eyes or mouth.
What is colloidal oatmeal and how does it work?
Colloidal oatmeal is a gentle, naturally-derived ingredient known to help with dryness, eczema and irritated skin. Even though the word “colloidal” sounds a little scientific, it’s simply made from oats that have been ground up into very small pieces and added to water. When applied to the skin, natural oils and glucan in the oats replenish moisture deep down, while a soothing, protective barrier is created to prevent irritation.
Can I use these products on my baby who has a serious nut allergy?
We suggest reading the ingredient list for each formula to make sure they don’t contain anything your baby should avoid, and if not, perform a small patch test and wait at least 24 hours before starting regular use. We use organic oils in our formulas, some of which come from shea nuts and coconuts (which are sometimes considered to be nuts). We are also not a nut-free facility, so we cannot guarantee there has been no cross-contamination.
If my baby experiences a reaction to one of your products, what should I do?
We use only the most gentle ingredients in our formulas, including organic plant-based ingredients, but individual allergies to certain plants and oils can’t always be predicted or prevented. If your baby experiences a reaction, such as a rash, discontinue use immediately and consult your doctor if the symptoms don’t go away. We recommend doing a patch test with our products before regular use to be extra safe.

Essential Oils
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are the highly concentrated “essence” of a plant, obtained by distillation or cold-press processing. These nourishing oils have a long history of therapeutic use, and today about 20% of essential oils in the market are used in the pharmaceutical industry. While there are well documented pharmacological effects that inform our safety guidelines, our essential oils are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
How do I use essential oils?
Essential oils are as versatile as the plants from which they come. They can be used in a number of ways, including adding a few drops to:
Is Goddess Garden Certified USDA Organic?
We offer all USDA certified organic essential oils, with the exception of our jasmine sambac absolute. Our facility is certified NSF organic, and we are currently in the process of obtaining USDA certification.
Is it really important to be certified organic?
There are myriad companies claiming confusing certifications. By offering certified organic oils, we can clear that up. There are very specific standards for an organic certification, and it’s regulated by a third-party who makes sure our oils are what we say they are—pure and not contaminated with synthetic chemicals.
Are your oils therapeutic grade?
There’s no formal grading standard in the essential oil industry. There’s no government agency or organization, like the FDA, that certifies essential oils as “therapeutic,” “medicinal” or “aromatherapy” grade in the U.S. These are marketing terms that are now used by aromatherapists to differentiate the active constituents in the oil to guarantee they are effective. Our oils are effective, potent and pure—ideally suited for therapeutic use and thus, therapeutic grade. They’re also certified organic so you know you can trust them.
Why do your organic oils cost less than oils that aren’t even certified organic?
You get what you pay for. That’s why we keep it simple. We don’t have to pay multiple tiers of people who are selling our products for us. We just offer the best oils available, and keep our operations simple. That lets us offer the very best, therapeutic-grade, certified organic oils at an affordable price—making quality accessible to everyone.
If a little is good, is more better?
Essential oils are intrinsically powerful, so we recommend sticking with the recommended dilution rates for On-the-Go aromatherapy and no more than 5 drops in your diffuser. A little goes a long way, but if you’d like a stronger scent, feel free to experiment with it!
What do I do if I add too much essential oil to the rollerball? I sit harmful?
Depending on the individual essential oil, area in which it is applied, and other factors, too much essential oil could cause skin reactions. While Goddess Garden steers clear of essential oils considered to be dermal irritants and sensitizers in our On-the-Go aromatherapy recipes, we do recommend sticking with the recommended dilution rates.
Aromatherapy Bracelets and Blends
Do I need to dilute the Aromatherapy Bracelet Blends before applying to the bracelets?
No. The blends are already mixed with gentle jojoba oil. The blends are intended to be worn on the bracelets and not the skin, but we use jojoba to reduce the likelihood of skin irritation.
Can the Aromatherapy Bracelet Blends irritate my skin?
While the Bracelet Blends are not meant for direct skin application, they are blended with jojoba oil to reduce the likelihood of skin-irritation in the event there is contact. Sensitivities and allergies vary, however, so if you notice skin irritation, please discontinue using that blend.
Can I wash the bracelet? Do I need to wash it before applying a different blend?
You can wash the bracelet, but it’s not necessary. If applying another blend, rest easy—they all work wonderfully together. The older blend will eventually fade, but you can enjoy the aromatherapy benefits of both until then. And if you perhaps drape your wrist in a plate of spaghetti, feel free to wash the bracelet. We won’t judge.
How do I care for my bracelet?
Treat this bracelet like any other piece of jewelry. We recommend that you do not wear it while you sleep, shower, swim or use a hot tub. We also recommend not using it with harsh cleaning chemicals. But we know you’re already using safe, natural household cleansers so that’s one less thing to worry about!
What kind of metal are the Aromatherapy Bracelet charms made from?
The charms are stainless steel or a nickel-free and lead-free metal alloy.
Can I use the bracelet with my own essential oil blends?
We recommend using our specialty Aromatherapy Bracelet Blends with our bracelets. They are blended with the ideal amount of jojoba oil to protect the skin from possible irritation. The custom bottle also delivers the precise amount of oil to the stones. Other essential oil bottles can dispense too much oil which, aside from being wasteful, can cause irritation or become overpowering.
How often can I reapply the blends?
Apply as often as you like. We suggest reapplying whenever you notice the scent begin to fade or whenever you need a little extra aromatherapy benefit.
How did you come up with 186 different mood enhancement combinations?

How do I choose the right bracelet?
All our Aromatherapy Bracelets have lava rocks to carry the scent of the Bracelet Blends. Typically, the stone you need is the one you will be attracted to. Choose the one that appeals to you most. Wear one, two or all three bracelets—you can’t go wrong!
How do I know what scents go with my bracelet?
Follow our suggested pairings or just follow your mood. Do you need an energy boost? Do you need to focus? Pick the blend that best suits your objective. Feel free to mix and match, or get creative and try multiple oils and bracelets.
How do I use the Aromatherapy Bracelets and Blends?
Simply dab the Bracelet Blend directly onto the lava rocks on the bracelet. The oil pools in the porous areas rather than being absorbed. You can also rub the oil to spread it out along the bracelet. Take the blend with you and reapply as needed, or use different blends throughout the day, depending on your needs. There are 186 different ways to affect your mood. Choose your own path!
Essential Oils – Preparation Process
What is the difference between an absolute and an essential oil?
They are very similar. Both are concentrated, highly aromatic mixtures, extracted from plants. Essential oils can be directly extracted from plants by steam distillation, expeller pressing or cold pressing. Absolutes, however, require the help of a solvent to retrieve the essence. Some flowers are so delicate steam distillation cannot be used to extract the fragrant oil. The intense heat would destroy the flowers, causing them to become compacted into a solid mass that steam cannot penetrate. If the steam is unable to move freely through the flowers during distillation, it is impossible to extract the oil. Similarly, some plants, like vanilla, are unable to be pressed or steamed.
What products are not essential oils?
Jasmine sambac is an absolute; vanilla bourbon is an extract; jojoba oil is a liquid wax; the rest are essential oils.
What is “steam distillation”?
If you immediately thought of steaming vegetables, you’re exactly right. The botanicals are placed in a container over boiling water and exposed to the rising steam vapor. Similar to making a tea, this method is best used for leafy plants.
What is “expeller pressing”?
This method is most commonly used to extract oils from seeds and nuts. Basically, the item is smashed between two rotating metal plates, forcing the oil out through high, constant pressure.
What is “cold pressing”?
Cold pressing is similar to expeller pressing, except the temperature is kept to lower levels. When an object is pressed via the rotating plates, it can produce friction, which can produce heat. Cold pressing employs the extra step of keeping the temperature to a controlled level. This helps protect oils, like those from citrus peels, that can be damaged by high temperatures.
Why isn’t the vanilla bourbon an essential oil?
The aromatic compounds which give vanilla its delicious scent cannot be harvested by steam distillation, expeller pressing or cold pressing. Our organic vanilla is extracted via supercritical CO2 extraction. When CO2 (carbon dioxide) is subjected to high pressure, the gas turns into liquid. This liquid CO2 can be used as a very safe, “liquid solvent,” which will capture the aromatic molecules. At a normal pressure and temperature, the CO2 reverts to a gas and evaporates, leaving the aromatic qualities behind. In the case of vanilla bourbon, using CO2 produces a vanilla with a fragrance true to the original plant without the alcohol that can typically be detected in an absolute.
Why isn’t the jasmine an essential oil?
Jasmine flowers cannot be steam distilled, expeller pressed or cold pressed. They are incredibly fragile, and it takes eight million of them to make a single kilogram of jasmine oil. Because of this, a solvent is used to get all of the precious essence out of the blossom. In the process, the solvent is removed. Any remaining residues in absolutes would be in the order of around one part per 300 million. Because the process is different, this oil is not able to be certified organic. Absolutes are extremely concentrated and should always be diluted.
Why are some of your essential oils infused in jojoba?
We infuse our vanilla bourbon, neroli, jasmine and Roman chamomile in pure, organic jojoba oil. These extracts, oils and absolutes are extremely potent and treasured. This infusion allows them to become much more affordable than they would be in their pure forms. Since the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy recommends diluting oils before topical application, this also helps ensure the proper recommended dilution rates without extra measuring on your part. Similarly, the AromaPersona kits include jojoba oil.
Is there a difference between cinnamon bark and cinnamon leaf oil?
Cinnamon bark oil, like we offer, is steam distilled from the bark. It is stronger and has a longer lasting scent than cinnamon leaf oil. Cinnamon leaf oil is easier to extract since it comes from the leaves, but it is more mild and doesn’t last as long. It is often much less expensive for these reasons.
Essential Oils – Miscellaneous
How long does it take aromatherapy oils to begin affecting your mood?
Immediately! Essential oils can start impacting your mood before your brain even recognizes and translates the scent. Your sense of smell is your most powerful sense. Smelling certain aromas can trigger good memories and instantly lift your mood by association.
Can I use essential oils directly on my skin?
We recommend avoiding the use of undiluted essential oils directly on your skin. For topical on-the-go aromatherapy application, we’ve provided the proper proportions to achieve the desired results. We don’t recommend using the following oils in personal scents on skin, as they may cause skin irritation.
*Please note this is not a complete list and only includes the oils we sell.
What is the shelf life of each of your products?
Shelf life varies and greatly depends on how the oils are used and stored. Leaving oils in the sun or light, or exposing them to wide temperature fluctuations will shorten their life, while storing them in a cool, dark place will prolong them. Our oils are divided into groups and are easily identifiable by the colors on the labels. Given normal use and proper storage, our essential oils should last for the following lengths of time after they are opened:
*For blends, follow the same guidelines, using the shortest time listed for all the oils in the blend.
Can I use essential oils on or around my kids and pets?
Some essential oils are shown to be safe for your kids and/or pets and recommend consulting with your pediatrician or veterinarian. We always recommend keeping essential oils out of reach of children and pets due to the risk of consumption.
What is the recommended way to store your products?
Because oxidation is the main issue, we recommend storing your products in a cool, dark place with the lid tightly sealed.
Are your products tested on animals?
No, our products are never tested on animals (unless you count our team—we can be a little wild).
Can I store my oils in the refrigerator or freezer?
Yes. Because they are oils, they will not freeze, although some of the constituents within the oils could become cloudy as they crystalize. Once the oil warms up, this cloudiness should dissipate. Storing oils in the refrigerator will only prolong their life, but take care to label them as not for consumption!
Do you distill your own oils?
While we currently do not distill our own oils, our mission is to make top-quality oils accessible to everyone. We source the best available UDSA-certified organic oils from around the world, from suppliers who have mastered the art and have a similar mission.
Daily Facial Routine
What is sun damage?
There are two types of sun damage: the kind you see right away via sunburns, and the kind that sneaks up on you in the form of early aging. Many people are cautious about the UVB rays that cause burns, but damage from UVA rays adds up day by day and leads to premature aging, or photoaging. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, scrambling collagen and damaging the skin’s DNA. This damage appears years later in the form of wrinkles, dark spots and rough, sallow skin. Both types can also lead to skin cancer. If you go outside without sunscreen or protective clothing, you get sun damage, even in the winter and on cloudy days, regardless of if you’ve ever had a sunburn.
How do I know if I have sun damage?
How do we say this…? You do have sun damage. Many people think sun damage is only dark spots, but 90-percent of age-related changes in the skin’s appearance are caused by the sun. Wrinkles, loss of elasticity, sallow (yellowing) skin, dark spots and rough skin are all signs of sun damage. Burning isn’t the only way the sun damages your skin. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, so the damage shows up years later in the form of premature aging. So, if you go outside, you have sun damage.
Can sun damage really be repaired?
Yes! The first step is to stop the damage by using a daily sunscreen. Aging UVA rays go through clouds and glass, making daily sunscreen a must. A study in the Annals of Internal Medicine showed daily sunscreen wearers had no detectable increase in skin aging after 4.5 years. Damage you already have can also be repaired. An independent test of Under the Sun and Face the Day used together resulted in a 10.5-percent decrease in wrinkle depth after 45 days and a 23.5-percent decrease after 90 days. Our Daily Facial Routine was designed to send nutrients to the source of the sun damage, to replenish and speed up the skin’s own healing process.
Can I use the Daily Facial Routine products if I have sensitive skin?
While every person has different skincare needs, our plant-based skincare system was made for people who either don’t like, or experience reactions to, the hundreds of hidden and harsh chemicals in many skincare products. Because everyone’s needs vary, we recommend trying our products on the inside of your elbow, 24 hours prior to use, to make sure it works for you.
Can anyone use the Daily Facial Routine products? Would this be good for my son or daughter?
Our facial care products were designed with mature skin in mind, although we realize “mature” is a relative term. Our products are ideal for the unique skincare needs of people age 25 and older, but they will work for all ages as well as those with sensitive skin.
Is this an after-sun product?
Not in the traditional sense. While our Daily Facial Routine products can help soothe a sunburn, they are designed to do much more than that. They counter the effects of daily sun exposure, which adds up over time and accelerates the look of aging. Just like damage adds up gradually, positive results can too by adding our facial products to your daily routine. If you accidentally get too much sun, Day Undone would be a great choice to soothe and nourish delicate sunburned skin, but we also offer an Aloe Gel specifically designed to soothe a sunburn.
Are your facial products anti-aging?
You could call our products anti-premature aging. We believe in the beauty of every age! But we don’t stand for sun damage making us look older before our time. Since sun damage adds up over a long period of time, people often assume that its visible effects are just the normal signs of aging. Aging is natural, but there’s no reason why your skin needs to age faster than you do! Preventing and healing sun damage, like with our Daily Facial Routine, helps erase wrinkles, dark spots and roughness that are usually thought to be part of a natural aging process. Preserving our health is important at any age. That goes for our skin, too. A side effect of nourished, healthy skin is that it also looks younger and more vibrant, which our facial care line can help with.
I always protect myself from sunburn. Do I really need this?
You don’t have to suffer a burn to have sun damage. UVA and UVB rays all damage your skin, but only UVB rays burn you. UVA penetrates deeper into the skin. It breaks the skin’s structural matrix down over time, ultimately causing wrinkles, roughness and dark spots. Unlike burning rays, UVA rays go through clouds and glass, so most people don’t even know they’re getting sun damage. The Daily Facial Routine was designed to help repair and protect against this accidental sun damage.
I’m already in my 50’s. Is it too late for me?
It’s never too late to start using sunscreen and begin repairing sun damage. In fact, it’s even more important than ever! The Skin Cancer Foundation even cites a series of studies showing that the majority of sun damage occurs after age 40. That’s because the skin gets thinner as we age, allowing the UVA rays to go deeper into the skin and the damage to be more pronounced.
Are the Daily Facial Routine products pH balanced?
A pH level will vary for each person and refers to the acid content on the skin. The types of products you need will also vary based on your individual skin type. If a product makes your skin feel dry or tight, it could be too alkaline for you. If your skin feels too oily, the product might be too acidic. There is no one-size-fits-all product that is pH balanced for everyone, since everyone has different needs. That’s why the Daily Facial Routine offers lots of options to work with varied skin types.
I have oily skin and usually avoid oil-based products. Will the Daily Facial Routine products make me break out?
Our facial care products are intended for mature skin, age 25 and up, who are less prone to experiencing acne. Even if you are prone to acne, it’s important to note that all oils are not created equally. Certain oils help balance the skin’s natural protective layer, and some people find their skin becomes clearer after using them. We’ve even heard from customers that their adult acne improved after using our products. Everyone’s skin is different, but our facial care products don’t typically cause breakouts. If you’ve been using products laden with harsh chemicals, a blemish or two is possible as your skin pushes out what has built up so it can breathe again. This is normal with any detox and should be temporary. If you continue to have breakouts after a couple of weeks, stop using the product(s).
I currently use retinol. Can I use your Daily Facial Routine products instead?
The Daily Facial Routine is a great alternative for those who wish to avoid using harsh chemicals, like retinol, on their skin. Retinol can be highly irritating, and many people either cannot use it at all or are not fans of the side effects. The wrinkles, roughness and dark spots that are often the reason people resort to retinol are caused by sun damage. Our facial products provide a natural alternative to retinol to help repair sun damage, with the side effect of the products feeling good on the skin.
What are the differences between your traditional sunscreens and Face the Day and Tinted Face the Day?
How is Tinted Face the Day different than Face the Day?
In terms of benefits, they’re more similar than different! Both products include pure minerals for SPF 30 protection and can be used alone or under makeup. They also contain chicory root, which naturally mimics the effects of retinol to boost collagen production and offer an immediate firming effect. The biggest difference is in the formulas: Tinted Face the Day comes in different shades and contains iron oxides. These minerals provide a subtle color-adaptive tint that smooths the complexion and matches a wide range of skin tones. Because of the coloring, Tinted Face the Day uses titanium dioxide instead of zinc for SPF coverage, and we also made it water resistant. Other slight variations in ingredients also give it a thinner consistency similar to a BB cream, while Face the Day is thicker. For that reason, you might not need to apply Under the Sun Hydrating Vitamin Serum underneath it, as we commonly recommend for Face the Day.
Why does Tinted Face the Day use titanium instead of zinc for SPF coverage?
Both Face the Day and Tinted Face the Day offer powerful SPF 30 from minerals. Other than their ability to protect against UV rays, titanium and zinc have distinct properties that make them useful in different ways. We use zinc in Face the Day because it’s ultra-sheer and non-whitening on the skin. We use titanium in Tinted Face the Day to help us achieve the color-adaptive shades that match a variety of skin tones and provide subtle color correction to smooth the complexion.
Should I use Tinted Face the Day alone or with makeup?
It’s up to you! Tinted Face the Day was formulated as a protective moisturizer that offers light coverage using clean ingredients. Some might find that the subtle tint provides enough coverage for them, and others might want something more substantial. Since the formula provides color correction, smooths the complexion and firms the skin, Tinted Face the Day is great to wear alone. But it’s also light enough to wear under foundation for those wanting more comprehensive coverage, and its firming effect makes it a great primer!
How many shades of Tinted Face the Day do you offer?
We will have a total of four shades, with two currently available and two more coming soon! The inspiration behind Tinted Face the Day was partly driven by the fact that mineral sunscreen can still be whitening on darker skin tones. We wanted to create options that were more inclusive, and we performed even more extensive rounds of testing to make sure we got them just right! Based on feedback, we’ve circled back to adjust the coloring of our two darker shades, because we want them to be perfect. We’re very close to finishing those tints as well, and will make them available soon!
How long does the Daily Facial Routine take to work?
Some results will be visible immediately and will help reward daily use. The Daily Facial Routine was designed to be extremely hydrating and offer an immediate firming effect. Long-term results can vary, but an independent test of Under the Sun and Face the Day, used together, showed a 10.5-percent decrease in wrinkle depth after 45 days, and a 23.5-percent decrease after 90 days.
You have two nighttime moisturizing products. How do I use them?
Day Undone and Dream Repair offer different benefits, but it comes down to personal choice. Some people prefer a serum while others prefer a cream. Some use one or the other in the summer, but use both together to counter dry, winter skin. If you use both, we recommend applying the serum first, then waiting a few minutes before applying the cream.
Do I have to use all seven facial care products?
While the Daily Facial Routine products were all designed to offer unique benefits that work synergistically together, the products can be used on their own as well. You may want to start with one cleanser and one serum, or one evening moisturizer. Mix and match to see what best suits your skin. We recommend you start with Face the Day Daily SPF 30 Moisturizer & Firming Primer, since prevention is the most important step to repair.
Do I have to use the products in a specific order?
The products were designed to be used that way, but you can mix and match, especially if you are not using the entire set. Aside from Dream Repair, which is intended for nighttime use only, your skin will appreciate the ingredients no matter how you use them. We do, however recommend the following order:
Morning:
*If used at night, be sure to apply to the cheekbones, not directly under the eyes. The oils migrate overnight, and you could wake with puffy eyes.
Evening:
Can the Daily Facial Routine take away my dark spots?
We have not tested our products specifically for their ability to reduce dark spots, but we’ve heard from several users that they’ve seen improvement with dark spots after using our products. Additionally, studies have shown niacinamide (vitamin B3) and licorice root, which are used in Dream Repair, can help reduce dark spots by inhibiting the enzyme that controls melanin production.
Will my skin feel greasy after using the serums?
No, your skin should feel hydrated, but not greasy. The serums soak into the skin, sending nutrients to the source of the sun damage. It can take a few minutes to soak in, but if it still feels greasy, try using a little less serum. Skin varies and your needs change, even from season to season.
What do the Face the Day and Tinted Face the Day feel like on the skin?
Face the Day is a moisturizer, so it will be very nourishing. It is also a firming makeup primer and sunscreen. Depending on your skin’s need, you might want to use an additional moisturizer with it, like our Under the Sun Hydrating Vitamin Serum. If you tend to have oily skin, you may want to use Face the Day on its own. Tinted Face the Day is equally nourishing and also a sunscreen, but it has a thinner consistency closer to that of a BB cream. Because of this, most skin types will be less likely to need additional hydration with Tinted Face the Day.
Both are intended to be firming and priming, so they may take a few minutes to fully absorb, but they should not feel greasy!
What is the difference between an oil and a cream?
Our oil-based serums, Under the Sun and Day Undone, are designed to be lightweight and quickly absorbed. We chose oils that would penetrate deeply to deliver nutrients to the source of the sun damage. As such, the serums will not rest on the skin’s surface. Our creams, Goddess Garden Bright Eyes and Dream Repair, provide intense hydration that leaves your skin feeling smooth and soft. Some people prefer one texture over another, so we offer both. Creams and serums may also be combined so they work together to deliver added benefits.
What makes the Daily Facial Routine different than “anti-aging” products?
It’s attitude! You should celebrate every turn of the calendar. It’s not aging that’s the problem, it’s sun damage. Our facial products are uniquely formulated with plant-based ingredients to target the source of the sun damage that accelerates the look of aging. This helps repair the damage and provides the nutrients needed to speed up the skin’s own healing process. By stopping further damage and starting to repair what is already there, your skin can go back to its real age, which gives your skin a more youthful look.
Why is Dream Repair only for night use?
Dream Repair contains natural alpha hydroxy acids in the mango extract that help slough off the dead skin that gives a dull appearance and stimulates regeneration. This gives you a softer, brighter complexion, but it can temporarily make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Use Dream Repair only at night and wake with bright, nourished skin. It’s also important to use daily sunscreen while using Dream Repair and for a week afterwards.
What is the difference between the two serums, Under the Sun and Day Undone?
Under the Sun is designed to moisturize the skin and help ensure mineral sunscreen goes on evenly and easily. It contains lycopene to strengthen and provide a dose of strong antioxidant power that helps protect the skin from environmental damage. Marula and baobab lock in moisture to help improve elasticity. Day Undone quenches and softens the skin. It contains pomegranate to revive the complexion and rosehip to reinvigorate skin overnight.
Is Goddess Garden Leaping Bunny certified?
Yes! We are Leaping Bunny certified and are even supporting legislation to end cosmetics testing on animals. Learn more or get involved!
Are the Daily Facial Care products organic?
All the products in our Daily Facial Routine contain at least 70% organic ingredients, but only some are NSF-certified organic, including Face the Day, Bright Eyes, Fresh Start and Erase the Day.
What does the little open jar and number symbol on the box mean?
This is a universal symbol stating the amount of time in which the product should be used after the packaging has been opened. The number of months is represented by the small number to the side of, or inside, the jar.
Are the facial care products gluten-free?
With the exception of Tinted Face the Day, our Daily Facial Routine products do not contain gluten or wheat-derived products. The xanthan gum we use in some of our products is fermented from wheat, but our supplier has tested for this allergen and none remain after processing. However, we are not a gluten-free facility and our products are not tested specifically to be gluten-free. For those with a gluten sensitivity (or any allergy or sensitivity), we recommend trying our facial products on the inside of your elbow, 24 hours prior to use, to make sure it works for you.
Are the facial care products vegan?
You’ll be glad to learn that Goddess Garden’s Daily Facial Routine (and all our products) are indeed vegan! No animal products are used in our formulas, and all products are cruelty-free and Leaping Bunny certified as well.
Is the packaging recyclable?
Yes, the Daily Facial Routine products all come in recyclable packaging.
What preservatives do you use?
There are two ways to preserve a product. The first is to delay oxidation, and the other is to prevent the growth of harmful mold and bacteria. Our serums are oil based so we use vitamin E to delay oxidation. Our other Daily Facial Routine products are emulsions, meaning mixtures of oil and water. For these, we need to inhibit the growth of mold and/or bacteria, so we use different combinations of ingredients from this list: coconut-derived glyceryl caprylate and caprylhydroxamic acid, leuconostoc/radish root ferment filtrate, caprylyl glycol, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, trisodium thylenediamine disuccinate, dehydroacetic acid, benzyl alcohol and sodium phytate. Most of these ingredients have been given a one rating by the EWG, their safest rating, and all are considered safe for use in body products by the FDA. People regularly shop for food, but it would be strange (and inconvenient) to shop for sunscreen every few days. Because of that, these ingredients are considered the best options when the alternatives are harsher preservatives, like parabens, or the risks of not using them at all.
Do your facial products contain Salicylates?
Salicylates are naturally found in the bark, leaves, roots, skin and seeds of some plants. They protect the plants from insect damage and disease, but can be problematic for some individuals. Radish root ferment filtrate in our Erase the Day is a possible source of salicylates, as well as the willow bark in Fresh Start. If you are sensitive to salicylates, check the label for radish root ferment or willow bark. If that is not present, you shouldn’t have any issues. For anyone with allergies or sensitivities, we also recommend doing a patch test on the inside of your elbow to make sure the product agrees with your body.
