Our founders, Nova and Paul, created their very first sunscreen 14 years ago. They made it for their daughter’s sensitive skin and with the planet in mind. From that moment, they dedicated themselves to creating the best and safest sunscreen options. They wanted to make it easier for others who similarly want the best for their families and the environment. As part of that mission, Goddess Garden is always looking for ways to improve and increase our positive impact. We knew there were still barriers preventing reef-safe mineral sunscreen from being as widely used as it could be. So we created a plan to renovate mineral sunscreen and make it available to more people. The result was entirely new SPF 50 mineral formulas that are ultra-sheer, lightweight and incredibly easy to apply!
Why SPF 50?
Before we dig into it, we’ll answer a question with another question: why not? SPF 30 is prominent in mineral sunscreen sets because it strikes balance between powerful, good-for-you coverage and a great user experience. But we’re renovating sunscreen to shift the balance!
Increasingly, people are looking for higher SPF options, so we listened! SPF 30 protects against 97% of UV rays, but SPF 50 protects against 98%. One-percent might not seem like a lot at first glance, but when you spend as much time outside as possible (like we do), it adds up! We still offer SPF 30 options because they’re great for periodic or lower-level sun exposure like recess or a jog around the neighborhood. But SPF 50 is ideal for outdoor fanatics who spend weekends hitting the trails, rock climbing, surfing or splashing in the pool.
In the past, SPF 50 mineral sunscreen has come hand in hand with certain drawbacks. Higher SPF means higher mineral content, which can be whitening or create a thick, sticky consistency. For some, natural options have still always been the obvious choice. But for others, the decision hasn’t been so simple.
A Clear Solution
We wanted to provide a clear solution to the choice between harmful chemical agents and mineral sunscreens that are whitening and hard to apply. As usual, we turned to nature! The protection in new formulas comes from premium polished zinc, so they rub in clear on any skin tone. Organic plant-based ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter and coconut oil, help make our sunscreens unbelievably lightweight and easy-to-apply. They’re also dry-touch, so they absorb quickly without feeling sticky.
In addition to improving user experience, our new formulas are helping us make mineral sunscreen more inclusive. Because they’re ultra-sheer, they’re a better option for darker skin tones. They will also appeal to those who previously turned away from mineral sunscreen because it was whitening or sticky.
They’ll also provide an easy alternative for people with budding concerns about chemical sunscreens. We’ve always used zinc in our sunscreen, but recently, the ingredient has gotten some positive attention. The FDA proposed new regulations citing zinc as one of two sunscreen ingredients that are recognized as generally safe and effective. Twelve other ingredients on the market, including oxybenzone and octinoxate, were flagged for more research to determine whether or not they can carry the same designation. Another two chemical agents were deemed to not be generally safe and effective due to “safety issues.”
While the FDA’s research is ongoing, we’re happy to offer an option right now using ingredients consumers can trust. We want everyone to spend less time worrying—and, with smooth, dry-touch formulas, less time applying, too—and just enjoy the sun. After all, that’s what we’re here for!
Removing Barriers to Saving Our Reefs
One of our biggest priorities is giving consumers with the best options possible. Another is leaving a minimal footprint and a positive impact. We’ve only ever used reef-safe ingredients. However, recent bans on reef-harming chemical sunscreens in Hawaii, Key West, Florida and other locations have inspired us to redouble our efforts. They also, in part, inspired our new formulas.
The wave of legislation banning the sale of oxybenzone and octinoxate is building momentum. Legislators have proposed similar laws in Florida at the state level as well as in municipalities like Miami Beach and Surfside. Similarly, California’s legislators are looking for a pathway to help the reefs. This movement shows no sign of slowing, and it will mean a shift for many consumers.
Our new formulas provide an easy alternative for people in areas affected by these new laws, and for anyone wanting to make a positive change to help our oceans. With ultra-sheer, dry-touch and lightweight mineral sunscreen, anyone can get the effective coverage they need and a user experience they’ll love. And they can do it without putting themselves, or our reefs, at risk.
Making an Immediate Difference
At Goddess Garden, we focus on the power of now, and we hope our products inspire others to think similarly! Every bottle of mineral sunscreen makes a difference. And each person that chooses a better option for themselves and the environment has an impact. We’ve always been compliant with the new sunscreen laws and proposed regulations, ever since Nova and Paul started mixing pure minerals and organic ingredients in their own kitchen. But with our new SPF 50 sunscreens, we can open up effective, reef-safe options to more people. There’s much more work to do, but every step in the right direction is part of a formula for success!
