The Roots of Goddess Garden

The roots of Goddess Garden go far beyond our facilities here in Colorado. They lie in the Pacific Northwest where our founders, Nova Covington and Paul Halter, spent their childhood. Nova grew up in Oregon and the deep woods of British Columbia, and Paul in rural Oregon. During their childhoods, they both became “early environmentalists.” As such, they developed a deep understanding of the power of nature as well as a love and appreciation for the great outdoors.

Years later, after careers in corporate America, Nova and Paul became more keenly aware of the need for change in the skincare industry when their first daughter, Paige, had allergic reactions to the chemicals in conventional products. Nova, with an herbalist background, and Paul, with a nutrition science degree, were inspired to develop safe skincare solutions. Using gentle botanicals and pure minerals, zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, they created natural sun protection. From there, Goddess Garden began to grow.

In 2005, Goddess Garden had its first big kick nova-and-paigeoff at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, where the true course of their sunscreen line revealed itself. Back then, Goddess Garden’s main line was a spa product collection, with mineral sunscreen as one of 30 other products. But while other products gained some interest, the sunscreen was completely sold out by the second day of the festival. People found themselves at their booth by following the inviting scent of the essential oils in the mineral sunscreen.

In 2008, Nova, Paul and their team made their first visit to a natural product show, Expo East. There, they saw a sea of similarly-minded brands and an opportunity for an organic sunscreen company to thrive. Since then, we’ve discontinued older products and replaced them with a dedication to innovating mineral sunscreen. The first big milestone for innovation was the introduction of the first family-sized sunscreen lotion bottles. Before Goddess Garden, mineral sunscreen only came in personal-sized bottles. Then came the first mineral sunscreen spray with an innovative trigger-spray bottle. One recent addition that the Goddess Garden team is especially proud of is a non-aerosol continuous spray bottle. Again, the first of its kind on the market.

Nova & Paul: Parents, Founders, Partners

When it comes to balancing work and personal life, especially as a mother of two young daughters, Nova embraces the challenge. She has learned how to integrate her two lives, and tries to set an example for her daughters as a powerful female leader. It’s all about staying calm, enjoying the outdoors, practicing yoga, and living as stress-free as possible. Support from her husband, Paul, has contributed greatly to Goddess Garden’s success. Paul works as CFO, is key in product creation with Nova and is a huge part of creating the harmony between work and family.

Goddess Garden: For the Planet, For the People

We want people to enjoy the sun, not avoid it. Too many people have told Nova they’re allergic to sunscreen so have to choose between getting burned or not going out in the sun at all. Because those choices aren’t good enough, Goddess Garden mineral sunscreen protects and nourishes even the most sensitive skin without harsh sunscreen chemicals. In keeping with the care-for-the-people principle, Goddess Garden shows its commitment to customer satisfaction every day. We’re always available to listen to customers about their experience with the product.

Nova and Paul founded on two important principles: helping the planet and helping people safely enjoy the sun. During their childhoods, they watched old-growth forests in the Pacific Northwest get cleared. They were saddened by the trash that washed up on even the most remote beaches. These experiences inspired them both to make a difference for the planet. Even before starting Goddess Garden, Nova spent time every day to help the earth. It has always been a guiding passion for her in life. She believes consumers need to shift their perspective regarding the use of chemicals in everyday products. Nova knows that chemicals don’t only affect us, they affect our ecosystem as a whole, which is why all Goddess Garden products are reef safe, biodegradable, vegan and cruelty free.

Onward and Upward

In 2010, Goddess Garden still operated out of the Nova and Paul’s house. 6-month-pregnant Nova carried boxes up and down their basement stairs. Now, you can find their products in retailers across the U.S. and Canada! Goddess Garden has come a long way from its humble beginnings, but some things will never change. All along, we’ve worked tirelessly to improve our products and get them into the hands of the consumers. Because we know they can make a difference—for people and for the planet.
